Our Planet

We have a clear philosophy - Planet, People and Place. We use Planet as our anchor. Proud to be part of the B Corp global community, all striving towards one collective goal to use ‘business as a force for good’.™

We’re delighted to be joining the B Corp global community of thousands of businesses all striving towards one collective goal to use ‘business as a force for good’.™ UK Gov figures state that in 2023 there were 5.1 million companies registered in the UK, yet only 1,915 with UK Headquarters have received accreditation - BJB proudly being one.

March is the month where a global community of over 8,000 B Corps join together to celebrate everything it means to be a B Corp. To become a certified B corporation during this month feels ever more fitting. We’re deeply proud that our founding principles are being recognised along with our philosophy that design can make a real difference.

Our overall impact score was 90.9, when compared with the median score for ordinary businesses who complete the assessment is currently 50.9, we couldn’t be happier. The assessment was vigorous, and rightly so, the BJB team have been able to prove we meet high standards of social environmental performance, transparency and accountability.

However we will not become complacent, we have to constantly pursue our next challenge. And whenever we have decisions to make, we will continue to ask whether it aligns with our founding principles, and what impact it has on our commitment to be a sustainable and regenerative B Corp business.

Find out more about the B Corp Movement

From day one (some 16 years ago) our founders Adam and Steve, aimed higher than simply achieving growth, they wanted design to make a real difference. With a desire to make a difference in a marketplace where they felt not all companies had good principles or values.

Adam and Steve wanted to stand apart from the crowd, with a clear philosophy; Planet, People and Place, using Planet as their anchor, they recognised that becoming a B Corp was aligned with their aims.

To be part of this global movement and to be a part (however small) in the chain of businesses where we inspire, encourage and make sure we make the best decisions that help our economic system to be a more inclusive, equitable, and regenerative global economy.

B Corp’s assessment process is rigorous, and rightly so. To receive an impact score of 90.9 (the median score for ordinary businesses who complete the assessment is currently 50.9). So we are incredibly proud of our business ethics and how much we care deeply about ‘doing business for good’, which is at the very core of the B Corp movement.

OUR SUSTAINABILITY COMMITMENT

We have a clear philosophy; Planet, People and Place. We use Planet as our anchor.

That means whenever we discuss the impact of our projects, our business, the decisions we make for our staff, our clients, our suppliers, our community, it is the Planet that is central to our decision making process.

How? As a business we have committed to a series of innovations, aligned with B Corp principles. The vetting of our suppliers to ensure they have and maintain strong ethical, sustainable and diversity standards. Including reviewing any EPD’s (environmental product declaration) certification available. It means we commit to re-use and re-cycling of products ahead of provision of new where there is positive, sustainable benefit doing so. It means we support our communities with the donation of our time to local charities, we also discount the fees we charge to charitable entities by a minimum of 10%. Over the past 2 years, over 25% of our business income has been from the Charitable or Government/NGO sectors.

We use industry standard accreditations such as BREEAM to support projects attain a validated measure of sustainability. Where we’ve supported clients with BREEAM via one of our Partner network consultants, each project has achieved the highest possible BREEAM accreditation.

For the award winning project at WD-40 this was ‘Excellent’, a creditable goal given the level of level of physical intervention and limits to re-use of existing services within the building.

The impact of statutory minimum EPC ratings on existing building stock is having a very significant effect on the interior space too. Whether through replacement of existing mechanical and ventilation systems or additional external or internal insulation and cladding solutions. We are cognizant of the need to respond to not just current but future legislation and leading industry thinking.

Some projects and clients have their own goals, Environmental, Social, and Governance, ESG for example. To which we review and align ours, this can be toward specific targets of diversity and inclusion, accessibility or mental and physical health. From the specification of mothering rooms, prayer rooms, quiet spaces for meditation or reflection, flexible spaces for group activity and informal, social interaction within the workspace or the inclusion of substantial amounts of live planting to enhance well being. It is also about equity not equality, where equity means fairness and impartiality toward gender, race, age, mental and physical health.

Our biggest goal however is to continually reduce, re-use, recycle.

In March 2024 we become a B Corp Accredited Business which we proudly champion as we continue to design exceptional working environments for people to thrive in.
